Frigid weekend temperatures prompt cold weather alert

Snowy and frigid conditions return to London on Friday, Jan 12. 980 CFPL

Londoners will get to experience a wide range of weather Friday, with fog, rain, freezing rain and snow in the forecast.

Environment Canada also expects the wind to pick up throughout the Friday afternoon and into the overnight hours.

The national weather agency issued a special weather statement for the area, warning of the risk for freezing rain as the temperature plunged.

The statement was lifted around 1:30 Friday afternoon; at that point heavy snowfall had begun falling in London and the temperature had already dropped to -5 C.

At least two flights scheduled to arrive at the London International Airport from Toronto had been cancelled as of 2 o’clock Friday afternoon.

The dip in temperature also prompted a cold weather alert from the Middlesex London Health Unit, that will be in effect Saturday evening through Monday.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority issued a flood watch Thursday that remains in effect. They’re making sure residents stay clear from waterways as water levels are rising.
