On Wednesday morning, Lambton OPP said their investigation showed the tanker truck was travelling east on Courtright Line approaching Kimball Road when the minivan, travelling south on Kimball Road, failed to stop at a stop sign governing the intersection.

The driver, 66-year-old Cheryl Riley of Walpole Island First Nation,  and passenger of the minivan, 20-year-old Tahja Cadotte of Wallaceburg were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The 41-year-old Central Huron man who was driving the truck was able to walk away from his vehicle and was later hospitalized for minor injuries, police said.

Officers say their investigation is ongoing.

Police closed the intersection for several hours but said around 6:30 p.m. that Kimball Road had reopened. Sections of Courtright Line east of Kimball, however, would remain closed until the investigation had concluded and all vehicles had been removed.

No environmental concerns were reported as a result of the tanker and its contents, police said.
