NDP leadership candidate Erin Weir withdraws from race

REGINA – A Saskatchewan NDP leadership candidate is withdrawing from the race and throwing his support behind a competitor.

“After extensive discussion with my campaign team, I have decided to withdraw from the leadership race and support Ryan Meili,” said Erin Weir.

Weir said he and Meili share many of the same policy ideas.

“Based on his book, his policy announcements during the campaign, his comments in leadership debates across the province and today’s shared policy statement, I believe that Ryan is deeply committed to many of the same policy ideas.

The policy statement includes undertaking a resource revenue royalty review before 2015, fighting climate change, providing $7 per day childcare and raising the minimum wage to $11.00.

MLAs Trent Wotherspoon and Cam Broten are also vying for the leadership.

New Democrats are to pick their new leader March 9 at a convention in Saskatoon. 

The winner will take over from John Nilson, who was been interim leader since Dwain Lingenfelter resigned after the 2011 provincial election.
