A 20-year-old man remains in critical condition after Peel Regional Police say a car crashed into a barrier in southwest Brampton Thursday evening while street racing.
Emergency crews were called to Chinguacousy Road north of Charolais Road at a rail crossing at about 9:45 p.m. with a report a vehicle had hit a barrier and flipped over.
Police said they believe a Dodge Charger and a Dodge Challenger were engaged in street racing activity in the area of Chinguacousy Road and Charolais Road.
Investigators said the Challenger was travelling southbound on Chinguacousy Road at a high rate of speed before the driver lost control and mounted a centre median, striking a railway crossing indicator and colliding with another vehicle that was travelling northbound. They said they have evidence the crash happened as a result of the racing. The driver, a 20-year-old from Kingston, was taken to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries.
Police said the Charger left the scene.
Peel police’s major collision bureau was called in to assist with the investigation into the crash. Anyone with information or dashcam video is being asked to contact police.
