An outburst caught on tape is causing a stir in hockey circles.
Selkirk hockey dad Jason Boyd admits he stepped over the line when he called a boy on the opposing St. Boniface team names then yelled at the boy’s father on Monday night at Southdale Arena.
“It was in the heat of the moment,” Boyd said by phone Wednesday from a hockey tournament in North Dakota, “passionate hockey game in a intense atmosphere at a hockey rink just like any other Canadian hockey rink every night of the week.”
Chuck Kitson says he stepped in when Boyd called his son names after Kitson’s son drew a penalty for a head shot.

“He threatened to smash my face in,” Kitson said. “I then said to him, ‘You’re threatening with violence?’ ”
Kitson said he then walked away, knowing nothing good would come of the argument.
“That’s just inappropriate,” Hockey Winnipeg president Don McIntosh said after watching the minute-long YouTube video — but it’s the not the first incident Hockey Winnipeg has seen.
“I’ve seen fisticuffs in the stands with parents, I’ve seen where police need to be called to the rink — oh yeah, it happens,” McIntosh said.
Hockey Winnipeg is looking at making it mandatory for all hockey parents to take an online course created by hockey star Sheldon Kennedy.
“Were looking at a program that exists in Hockey Alberta and some degree in Saskatchewan where all parents are required to take a respect in sport program.”
The Lord Selkirk Minor Hockey Association is aware of the incident and the video and is currently reviewing what, if any, action will be taken.
“They have the right to not allow parents into their rinks, to suspend them from attending games,” McIntosh said.
No disciplinary action has been taken yet but Boyd said he’d be happy to take the course.
“I regret saying what I said about the man’s child, that’s for sure,” Boyd said.
