Two-and-a-half years after a Surrey man was killed in a confrontation with police, charges have been laid against an officer involved in the incident.
Twenty-year-old Hudson Brooks was fatally shot by police outside the South Surrey RCMP detachment in the early hours of the morning of July 18, 2015.

RCMP Const. Elizabeth Cucheran has now been charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of assault with a weapon related to his death.
Police had initially been called to the scene to reports of a man in distress.
Neighbours had reported yelling and the sound of smashing glass, and police discovered several vehicles with smashed windows the following day.
At the time of the incident, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) said shots were fired after a physical struggle took place. One officer was also taken to hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot injury.
Only police weapons were recovered from the scene.

In October 2016, the IIO filed a report to Crown Counsel asking prosecutors to consider charges in the shooting.
Cucheran is slated to appear in court on Jan. 9, 2018.
Brooks’ death sparked outrage among friends and family, who complained of a lack of transparency about the events surrounding his final moments.
Supporters have staged regular protests in his memory, and launched an online campaign under the banner #JusticeForHudson.
