Repeat offender facing 130+ new charges following Winnipeg break-in spree

Two men with a criminal history have been arrested in connection with a rash of residential break-ins all across Winnipeg over the past eight months.

Starting Apr. 25, one or more suspects forced their way into single-family homes and made off with gold and jewellery.

Police were able to catch the suspects following a Glenwood break in Dec. 6.

A home in the first 100 block of Blenheim Avenue was broken into around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Jewellery and wrapped Christmas presents were stolen. A neighbour saw the suspects take off in a vehicle.

Jason Kenneth Lundberg, 42, has been charged with:

  • break, enter and theft x 71
  • possess weapon x 63
  • fail to comply with recognizance
  • firearms related offences

Jamie Leonard Brenner, 40, has been charged with break, enter and theft x 2.

Const. Tammy Skrabek of the Winnipeg police told Global News Monday that both individuals have a history of arrests for similar offences.

Lundberg has a long list of previous charges dating back to 1988:

  • theft over x 3 (1988, 1994)
  • theft under x 3 (1991)
  • robbery x 4 (1992, 1994)
  • possess property obtained by crime under $5000 x 8 (1993, 1994, 1998, 2006, 2007)
  • unlawfully at large (1993)
  • criminal negligence (1994)
  • escape lawful custody x 2 (1994, 1998)
  • fail to comply recognizance x 3 (1998, 1999, 2006)
  • fail to appear (1998)
  • break, enter and theft x 8 (1999, 2001, 2007, 2011)
  • possess weapon (2000)
  • break and enter with intent x 2 (2000, 2002)
  • flight while pursued by police officer (2017)

In 2007, he was sentenced to two years plus one year pre-sentence custody for break, enter and theft and possession of property obtained by crime. He was sentenced to 10 months, 15 days in January of 2011 on a conviction for break, enter and theft.

Brenner has six previous convictions, three of which are for similar offences.

The estimated value of stolen goods from the latest round of break-ins totals $180,000. Damage caused to property during the break and enters is estimated at around $60,000.
