EDMONTON – Alberta Health Services issued an air quality advisory for Edmonton on Wednesday, warning those with asthma and other respiratory or cardiovascular conditions to be careful outdoors.
The advisory is in effect until further notice. Anyone who notices their symptoms worsening should contact their doctor.
According to Alberta Health Services, the poor air quality has been caused by a temperature inversion. A band of warm air above the city has trapped the cooler air at the ground, allowing pollutants to build up at ground level.

Last summer, Alberta Environment found east and central Edmonton had exceeded national standards for winter smog, specifically for fine particulate matter.
The finding means the City of Edmonton, environmental groups and industry representatives have two years to develop a plan to reduce emissions, decreasing the frequency of advisories like this one.
