An elderly couple escaped a fire at their Brossard home after their smoke detector alerted them to the blaze.

The fire happened at a bungalow on Touchette Street in Brossard around 1:15 a.m.

“It was an electrical fire that started in the garage and moved to the main floor of the house,” said Longueuil fire department spokesperson Jean-Guy Ranger.

“The damage is estimated around $300,000.”

An elderly woman was transported to hospital with cardiac issues related to stress.

About 30 firefighters put out the blaze within an hour.
