The Frontenac Falcons are number one in Kingston High School Senior Girls basketball.
On Monday night at the Queen’s Athletic Centre, Karen Pixley’s club defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders in a defensive contest 36-33.
For the Falcons it was their first KASSAA championship since 1996, ending a 21-year drought.
Co-Captain Claire Wiersema says it was a tough battle right to the end.
“Holy Cross is a great team and gave it everything they had, but we prepared very well for this game and that preparation paid off in the end,” said the 5th-year senior.
Frontenac’s leading scorer was Aaliyah Edwards with 15 points. The grade 10 student is a member of Canada’s National Under-16 squad.
It was definitely a tough game, Edwards said, but ” the girls never quit and we did a tremendous job in shutting down the Crusader’s offense.”
The Falcons now advance to the Eastern Ontario AA Championships which will be held on Thursday in Arnprior.
The Crusaders, despite the loss, will represent the region at the Ontario AAA championships later this month in Kitchener.
