Man in ceiling of Fredericton drugstore sparks 3-hour standoff with police

A man holed up in the ceiling of a Fredericton drug store sparked a three-hour standoff with police on Monday.

According to a press release from the Fredericton Police Force, officers responded to a suspicious person call at the Shoppers Drug Mart on Prospect Street when they found a man in the building’s ceiling.

After their initial attempts to remove him were unsuccessful, the incident was deemed to be a barricaded person call.

Officers also determined that the man was armed with a weapon.

Multiple units, including patrol officers, the emergency response team, K9 unit and crisis negotiators all responded to the scene.

The Fredericton fire department was also on scene, assisting with equipment to aid the police.

Eventually, crisis negotiators were able to successfully talk the suspect down from the ceiling, and he was arrested.

The man was taken into custody and is facing several charges.
