Twitter releases six-second video app ‘Vine’

TORONTO –Twitter users are now able to embed short, looping videos in their tweets, thanks to Twitter’s new service Vine, released Thursday.

The application allows users to post videos that are a maximum of six seconds in length.

“Posts on Vine are about abbreviation – the shortened form of something larger. They’re little windows into the people, settings, ideas and objects that make up your life,” read a blog post on Vine’s website. “They’re quirky, and we think that’s part of what makes them so special.”

Videos are shot using the standalone Vine app by taking short, one- or two-second clips and melding them together to appear as a continuous loop.

Twitter acquired Vine in October 2012, but the application went live on Apple’s App store Thursday.

“Our companies share similar values and goals; like Twitter, we want to make it easier for people to come together to share and discover what’s happening in the world,” read the Vine blog post.

The application has already been dubbed the “Instagram of video,” thanks to the similarities between the apps.

The app connects with your Twitter account, similar to the way Instagram connects with Twitter and Facebook, so that videos are embedded directly into tweets. The app also has its own social scene, which allows users to follow each other and “like” other user’s videos.
