Elmsdale Superstore evacuated after smoke detected

ELMSDALE, N.S. – Customers and staff at the Atlantic Superstore in Elmsdale had to make a hurried exit out into the cold, after smoke was detected inside the store around noon on Thursday.

Firetrucks from Elmsdale and Lantz responded to the scene, but it was quickly determined the smoke was actually dust blown out of a heating duct that had not been used recently.

Loblaws confirms the the heating vent near the front entrance had been turned on because of the frigid temperatures outside. When the air came one the dust built up inside blew out into the store and appeared as smoke.

Mark Boudreau, Director of Corporate Affairs for the Atlantic Region, said store management wanted to “err on the side of caution” by evacuating the store.

Boudreau said everything was back to normal after about 40 minutes.
