Wildfire west of Cochrane under control

A wildfire that popped up at around 9 a.m. Wednesday is considered to be under control, according to officials.

Global News has learned the fire began near the intersection of Highway 40 (Forestry Trunk Road), Richards Road and Township Road 270 B, which is west of Waiparous Village and the town of Cochrane.

Nine fire trucks from four fire departments, including Cochrane and Exshaw, were involved in battling the blaze, as well as two helicopters from the provincial government. By 2 p.m., fire crews from Cochrane and Exshaw had left the scene.

The fire grew quickly and as of 12:30 p.m. was three hectares in size.

No homes or buildings were affected by the fire and no one was evacuated from the area.

Wind is expected to remain intense throughout the day and a wind warning remains in effect with gusts of 70 km/h to 100 km/h expected until early evening.
