There was no connection between a man’s death and the actions of RCMP during a standoff in Revelstoke Oct. 17, according to the Independent Investigation Office of B.C.(IIO).
At 1:30 p.m. that day, Revelstoke RCMP pulled over a 2006 Toyota Corolla connected to an ongoing homicide investigation in Calgary.
An occupant in the small silver car was pulled over by police in Revelstoke, B.C. on Oct. 17, 2017.RCMP said the man behind the wheel was believed to be Mohammadali Darabi, a man they were looking for in connection to the death of his roommate, 29-year-old Cyrus Ebrahimi.
Numerous police and emergency vehicles were staged around the roadblock in the 700 block of Victoria Rd. for almost five hours.
Efforts were made to communicate with the driver, according to the IIO report, but he was unresponsive.
The RCMP’s Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called in to assist. They deployed a noise diversion device and approached the vehicle shortly after 6 p.m.
The suspect was found with undetermined injuries, said the IIO, and paramedics attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The IIO has released jurisdiction after finding no connection between the man’s death and the actions of police.
Darabi has yet to be positively identified as the man who died in the standoff.
The cause of death has also not been released by the B.C. Coroner’s service.
