New speed limit signs for Saskatoon construction zones

SASKATOON – The city of Saskatoon has installed new construction speed limit signs in the Circle Drive South construction zone.

The new signs are similar to standard speed limit signs but have an orange band indicating it is a construction zone.

Steps are also being taken so drivers know if orange zone speed limits are enforceable when workers are not present.

The city will cover or remove signs when the limit is not in effect.

“The hazards in construction zones vary depending on the nature of the work being done,” said Angela Gardiner, transportation branch manager for the city.

“In some instances, it is necessary to maintain detours and a reduced speed limit when workers are done for the day for the safety of drivers.

This includes the Circle Drive South project, where reduced speeds will remain in place due to hazards adjacent to the roadway.

Police will also be out enforcing speed limits in construction zones.

“This year we saw some potentially fatal accidents in construction zones,” said S/Sgt. Grant Obst.

“Even if you can’t see a hazard when you enter a work zone, it doesn’t mean they aren’t there.”
