Caller poses as police officer in new telephone scam

Calgary – Police are warning Calgarians of a new telephone scam where the caller poses as a police officer to try to trick people into giving them money.

During the hoax, the caller will describe a new program used to educate kids about internet safety. They’ll then ask for donations to help fund the initiative.

When victims ask for more specific information or documentation on the program, the caller hangs up immediately.

Police have gotten several reports of people receiving these fraudulent calls during the past few weeks.

Officials say they don’t solicit donations for their programs, and ask anyone who receives this type of call to capture as much information as possible about the caller, including any numbers that may be visible on call display.
