Detours in effect as rural Manitoba crews battle wildfires Wednesday

Several fires burned across Manitoba affecting provincial highways Wednesday. Global News

High winds and wildfires are keeping rural Manitoba fire departments busy and motorists are warned to look out for road closures.

The province told Global News a significant number of fire calls were made on Wednesday and the high winds are making some of the blazes difficult to predict.

A fire near Langruth, just east of Lake Manitoba, is threatening about half a dozen buildings. As of 4:30 p.m. none were damaged. The province’s water bombers are trying to attack the flames from above.

Smoke in the area has closed Highway 50. Highway 265 is also affected.

Just north of that wildfire, another blaze is burning near Amaranth. No buildings are at risk there.

Highway 6 has been closed because of a fire burning near Woodlands.

The RM of Montcalm confirmed a report of a fire on a farm near Letellier.

There is also a fire near Peguis First Nation and a provincial helicopter is dropping buckets of water on the flames there.
