Facebook, Instagram back up after widespread outages

Facebook was temporarily down for many social media users across Canada and in the U.S. on Wednesday, while many Instagram users had reported having difficulties accessing the photo-sharing app.

At around 11:15 a.m. ET, social media users began to report they were unable to access Facebook, with more than 1,500 reported outages.

Instagram users also reported outages around the same time.

In a statement Facebook said it was “aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing” both social media platforms.

“We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible,” a Facebook spokesperson said in an email to Global News.

Just before 3 p.m., Facebook said it had “nearly fixed the issue for everyone.”

“Earlier today, a networking issue caused some people to have trouble accessing Facebook services,” a spokesperson for the social media site said in an email to Global News. “We quickly investigated and started restoring access within about an hour, and we have nearly fixed the issue for everyone. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.”

It’s unclear what caused the connection issue for some users.

Many social media users turned to Twitter to report the outage.
