An injured hiker definitely has something to be thankful for today after he was forced to spend a chilly night on a mountain near Lions Bay.
The man, who has not been identified, was rescued Monday morning with a longline by North Shore Rescue crews, as it was too dangerous and dark to rescue the man Sunday night.
Six members of Lions Bay Search and Rescue hiked in and spent the night on Mount Harvey with the man, who had fallen to the bottom of a canyon.
He initially became trapped after climbing down a waterfall and ended up calling for help around 4 p.m. Sunday.
Mike Danks with North Shore Rescue says while the Thanksgiving long weekend hasn’t been too tough on crews, it’s still important for hikers to be aware when venturing out into nature, particularly as the daylight and temperatures fade during the autumn months.
“We’re really urging people to be prepared for the conditions at hand,” Danks said.
“Make sure you have a light source with you, and plan your hike appropriately to the daylight hours.”
Danks said it’s also important for hikers to choose trails that are appropriate for their fitness and experience levels, and to bring appropriate clothing, food and water.
