Head-on collision north of Westlock claims the lives of young woman, two young children

EDMONTON- A 23-year-old woman and two young children are dead following a head-on collision north of Westlock Thursday morning.

The collision happened around 11:00a.m. on Highway 44, approximately 85 kilometres north of Westlock.

RCMP say Dodge truck heading north on Highway 44 collided head-on with a Ford car that was travelling south along the highway.

A 23-year-old woman, a four-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy, who were in the car at the time of the collision, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Westlock RCMP.

Officers say a adult female and a young boy who were also in the car were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 46-year-old male driver of the truck was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

RCMP say highway conditions were poor at the time of the collision, due to heavy snow and poor visibility.

Officers say other motorists on the highway assisted until emergency crews arrived.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in the collision. Westlock RCMP say the driver of the truck is being charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
