Suspect shot by Edmonton police officer after vehicle rams police vehicle during traffic stop: EPS

A suspect is recovering in hospital after being shot by a police officer in west Edmonton on Tuesday night after police said one of their vehicles was rammed during an attempted traffic stop.

According to police, members of its Specialized Traffic Apprehension Teams were “conducting investigations” related to drug trafficking in the area of 44 Avenue and 211 Street, in the Edgemont area.

Just before 9:30 p.m., police said members tried to pull over a suspect vehicle and two members got out of their vehicle to arrest three suspects.

Police said the suspect vehicle then rammed the police vehicle and ran over a member’s foot before trying to flee the scene. They said a police officer then fired their gun at the vehicle, wounding the driver.

According to police, the driver was taken to hospital and is listed in stable condition. They said he was a male but did not say how old he was.

Two other suspects were arrested and taken into police custody.

Police said the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will now investigate the officer-involved shooting.

ASIRT is tasked with investigating incidents involving Alberta law enforcement officers that result in injury or death as well as “serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.”
