Longtime town councillor Barry Turner will be the next mayor of Morinville, Alta. Turner’s spot is guaranteed with no other challengers coming forth.

He will replace Mayor Lisa Holmes in the mayor’s chair.

Turner told 630 CHED’s Ryan Jespersen he was not expecting to get the win without a fight.

“This would have been my sixth election. So, yeah, I have never had this happen before.”

With many new politicians coming in, Turner said regional cooperation is going to be important.

“What’s super important is that we need to take care of the core, and that’s the city of Edmonton. Morinville is an important player, but at the same time if Edmonton isn’t healthy its going to affect everyone else in the region.”

The municipal elections take place Oct. 16 around the province.
