The phone, which costs upwards of $1,000, is one of several new products being unveiled at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple’s new campus in Cupertino, Ca.

One of the most common criticisms of previous version of the Apple Watch has been that the device needed to be tethered to users’ phones to send and receive data. This shortcoming has now been addressed, with analysts saying sales of the watch could double or even triple because of the new functionality.

Apple also introduced an upgraded version of the Apple TV capable of handling 4K video and equipped with special colour-enhancement technology. The company previously said it’s working with Netflix and Amazon Prime to bring their original 4K content to the device.

iPhone X

Apple is releasing a number of new iPhones, including a new flagship device, called the iPhone X, which could cost upwards of $1,000.

The new high-end phone is expected to feature an edge-to-edge display with richer colors and facial recognition to unlock the device without a fingerprint reader or physical home button.

However, the unveiling didn’t go altogether swimmingly, with an Apple executive’s attempt to use the phone’s “face unlock” feature failing on stage, forcing him to switch to his back-up device.

All the new iPhones will run on iOS 11, a new operating system that will not be available to older devices such as the iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPad, meaning these older devices will be unable to take advantage of new software and security updates.

The new operating system will make it even harder for law enforcement to extract users’ data without their consent, according to Wired.

How to watch:

Apple’s keynote and product launch event is being streamed online on Apple’s website, and can be viewed using the Safari or Windows Edge web browsers, or on devices running iOS7 or later.

If you have an Apple TV, you can watch the event on a dedicated channel on the device’s set-top box.
