A smoke alarm is being credited with alerting a couple to a fire in their baby’s bedroom.
The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a fire on the ninth floor of an eleven-storey apartment building at 264 King Street East at 9:52 a.m. on Saturday.
The fire was contained to the one unit and quickly extinguished.
No injuries were reported, although officials said the family cat died in the fire.
Residents who were evacuated from the building were able to return, aside from the family who lived in the apartment that caught fire.
The Red Cross will be helping the affected family.
Damages are estimated at approximately $85,000, and authorities said the probable cause of the fire is electrical.
The Hamilton Fire Department said this incident highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms, and reminds the public that the Ontario Fire Code requires everyone have a smoke alarm installed on every floor of their home, including basements.
