Man wanted for Edmonton strangling death arrested at Vancouver homeless shelter

Just hours after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest, police in Vancouver arrested a man wanted in connection with the death of a woman who was found strangled in an Edmonton apartment suite.

On Tuesday night, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said 49-year-old Gregory Christopher Tessman was arrested at a homeless shelter on downtown Vancouver’s East Hastings Street.

Tessman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 29-year-old Valerie Maurice.

“I would like to thank the media for their assistance with this investigation, which ultimately led to the quick arrest of Mr. Tessman,” Staff Sgt. Bill Clark of the EPS Homicide Section, said in a news release.

Earlier in the day, police said they believe Tessman travelled to Victoria, B.C. over the weekend and released images of him captured outside a grocery store.

They said Tessman lived in the apartment suite where Maurice was found but that they don’t believe the victim and the accused had a relationship.

Police believe Maurice went to a residence in the area of 144 Avenue and 88A Street in Edmonton at around midnight on Aug. 29.

Officers responded to a “check on welfare” call at a building in the area on Aug. 31, where they found Maurice’s body inside an apartment suite. Police said a friend of Maurice’s called them to check on her.

On Friday, the medical examiner determined Maurice died as a result of strangulation and her death was ruled a homicide.

Maurice was a resident of Montreal and she often travelled between that city and Edmonton, according to police.

Edmonton police said they’ve been in contact with Montreal police.
