A 50-year-old man pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit human smuggling, according to New Brunswick RCMP.
Police say that in July 2016, authorities were made aware that a 46-year-old woman had entered the United States illegally by crossing the Saint John River in a paddle boat.

The woman, originally from Ecuador, was stopped by U.S. authorities in Van Buren, Maine, shortly after crossing.
On July 28, 2016, members of the RCMP arrested two men, a 67-year-old from Edmundston, N.B. and a 50-year-old from Baker Brook, N.B.
Both men were eventually charged with conspiracy to commit human smuggling.

On Thursday, both men appeared in Edmundston Provincial Court.
The charge against one man was withdrawn while Richard Cyr of Baker Brook, N.B. pleaded guilty.
Cyr was fined $4,000 and a $1,200 surcharge.
