The Saskatchewan NDP has formally requested that the RCMP investigate what they’re calling Bill Boyd’s “potentially fraudulent immigration and economic opportunities” stemming from a trip to China in March 2017.
Boyd says he went to China as a private businessman, and that he was looking for investors for his company.
He was billed, however, as Minister of Economy, a post from which he resigned in April 2016.
A letter to Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki from Interim Opposition Leader Nicole Sarauer states the NDP is concerned “about the complacency and complicity of the Saskatchewan Party Cabinet and the Saskatchewan government in this matter.”
Boyd has asked the province’s conflict of interest to look into his trip. Boyd isn’t required to make the report public, but a Sask. Party spokesperson says they fully expect it will be released to the public after its completion.
The inquiry the NDP is requesting would require that results be made public.
“A lot of questions are being asked but no answers are being provided so we want to see the RCMP and the CBSA investigate that,” Sarauer said at a press conference Friday.
“In the absence of that, we’ll look at our other options.”
