X-Files cast back in Vancouver to shoot season 11 of series revival

Mon, Aug 7: Traffic in Downtown Vancouver is blocked for several days this week for the shooting of Deadpool 2, starring Ryan Reynolds. As Aaron McArthur reports, it’s just the latest in a series of shoots that look to make 2017 a record year for the number of productions around B.C – Aug 7, 2017

“The truth is out there,” and so is the cast of the X-Files.

The team behind one of the most iconic Vancouver-shot TV series of all time is back in town to film an 11th season of the rebooted franchise.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are reprising their roles as FBI agents: alien conspiracy true-believer Fox Mulder and his brilliant but ever skeptical partner Dana Scully.

Industry watcher Susan Gittins, who pens HollywoodNorth.Buzz and @YVRShoots, said the pair — along with Mitch Pileggi who plays FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner — have already been active on social media.

“David Duchovney started tweeting that he was in Vancouver on Thursday, didn’t say where he was, but it was recognizable mostly from the wildfire smoke,” she said.

“And Gillian Anderson shared a photo of her Scully wig, her red wig she wears when she comes here to be in character.”

Gittins said shooting is set to kick off on Tuesday in Vancouver’s Fairview Slopes neighbourhood.

And she said there is good news for any X-Files superfans hoping to catch a glimpse of the cast while they’re here in town.

“It’s 10 episodes long, this new event series, whereas before I think we only got six. So this is quite a long run and they’ll be with us until almost Christmas. December 21 is when they’re expected to wrap,” she said.

The X-files first premiered in 1993, and is widely credited with helping put Vancouver on the map as ‘Hollywood North.’

With plot lines ranging from government and alien conspiracies to creepy “monsters of the week,” it quickly became a cult favourite, spanning nine seasons, 202 episodes, and two feature films.

Five seasons were shot in B.C., where the wet, grey weather is credited with helping to set the show’s dark and mysterious tone.

The series was rebooted in 2016 after a 13-year hiatus, earning mixed reviews but high enough ratings to be renewed.
