Videos from the scene show one man hanging upside down from a crane — about 10 metres from the ground — while firefighters were rescuing him.

The other two were in a steel cage hanging from a crane about 30 metres high. According to the Ventura County Fire department, they were too high to reach by ladder so crews set up a rope system to rappel them down.

There were no injuries.

It is not clear what caused the men to get stuck but several local reports say the ride malfunctioned. The incident happened on the fair’s opening day.

The incident comes after several thrill rides at parks and fairs across the U.S. were shut down due to malfunctions. On July 26, one man was killed and seven others were injured when a ride fell apart at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus.

An 18-year-old man was tossed from the Fire Ball ride and killed on impact, about 15 metres from the ride, officials said.

“It’s kind of hard to imagine that you have family that goes to a state fair and those calls come, that there was a terrible accident and a terrible tragedy and somebody you love was involved,” Ohio Gov. John Kasich said.

State officials have since allowed some thrill rides to reopen after inspection.
