2 dead, 3 in hospital after massive crash on Hwy. 48 north of Newmarket

WATCH: Police are investigating after two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 48 at Old Homestead Road in Sutton, Ontario on Thursday. – Jul 27, 2017

Ontario Provincial Police say two people are dead and three people has been transported to hospital after a serious five-vehicle crash on Highway 48 at Old Homestead Road in Sutton.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said four commercial transport vehicles and one passenger vehicle were involved in the crash late Thursday morning. At least one person had to be extracted by emergency crews.

Ornge air ambulance say they have sent multiple choppers to the scene and airlifted a 10-year-old boy to the Hospital for Sick Children. Two others were also taken to hospital.

In an update provided by officials Thursday afternoon, they said the boy was listed in stable condition.

Scmidt said all of the vehicles were travelling northbound on Highway 48. He said it appears some of the vehicles stopped at a construction site and at least one vehicle didn’t stop.

Highway 48 was closed between Old Homestead and Latimer roads for several hours as officers investigated.
