Vancouver City Councillor Melissa De Genova will be calling for a formal inquiry, come Jan. 20, about the City’s salt situation.

She says the city shouldn’t be struggling with salt supplies.

“We need to make sure that we are doing our best to protect the citizens of Vancouver, that they are not going to slip and fall on our sidewalks. And we make sure that we have the salt necessary, the equipment necessary, and that we are actually proactive instead of reactive.”

De Genova says the city needs to be prepared for extreme weather, even if it’s unusual for Vancouver.

“If we are planning for earthquakes, and for local emergencies – I mean we have a whole team on that – then why are we not prepared for extreme weather? It doesn’t happen every year in Vancouver but it certainly does happen quite often.”
