Kris Russell is staying with the Edmonton Oilers.
The defenceman could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but he instead chose to sign a four-year deal with the Oilers worth a reported $16 million.
“I really enjoyed my time with Edmonton and wanted to continue to play there,” said Russel.
“Getting this deal and becoming an Oiler for the next four years, it’s pretty special.”
Russell, 30, signed a one-year deal with the Oilers during the 2016/17 preseason. He went on to play 68 games and record 13 points. The native of Caroline, Alta. is primarily known for his shot-blocking and rugged play. He led the NHL in blocked shots last season with 213.
“Last year my mindset was to play defensively sound hockey, sometimes there’s times to jump, and times to make plays and I would you err on caution side,” said Russell.
“That’s something I want to work on with the coaches. I still feel like I can put up some points, but at the same time I want to bring a two-way game.”
Russell has played in 641 career NHL games with the Oilers, Flames, Stars, Blue Jackets and Blues. He was drafted 67th overall in 2005.
The new contract is reported to include a modified no-trade clause in its third and fourth years.
