A Fonthill, Ont. woman will spend the next three weeks running the entire, 895-kilometre Bruce Trail to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis.

Emily Allan, who is the cross-country coach at Brock University, will be running in memory of her cousin, who died 12 years ago while waiting for a lung transplant. Sarah Bloomfield was 23.

Once Sarah was gone, Allan said she felt that she “had to do something in her memory, some way to give back and some way to make a difference and raise funds and awareness, and also to keep her memory alive.”

Even before starting the trek, her Bruce Trail journey has raised over $16,000.

Allan notes that “this is the most money that I’ve ever raised for Cystic Fibrosis, and it’s really exciting.” She said that people are “reaching out from all over.”

Her previous fundraising efforts have included cycling across the Canadian Rockies and a perimeter ride around Prince Edward Island.

She will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday in Tobermory, finishing 22 days later at Queenston Heights on Canada Day, and she will run nearly a full marathon each day, passing through Hamilton on June 28.

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian kids and young adults.
