Known by some as a ‘gentle giant’ – Joseph Bernie was 45 years old when his body was discovered on Salt Spring Island. Police believe he was murdered. Joseph reportedly told individuals that he was afraid that someone was after him and going to murder him. But police haven’t been able to identify who the individual or individuals were.
This case has been particularly hard to solve. Joseph suffered from mental health issues, was known for being out of touch with his family for long periods of time, and lived a transient lifestyle.

On October 10, 2015 – a recreational fisherman discovered Joseph’s body in a creek near ‘Fulford’ Harbour.
Investigators have reason to believe Joseph was attacked while he was living in this abandoned house located near the Old Fulford Inn. They believe his body was then transported to the nearby creek.
Joseph took to odd jobs doing casual labour to support himself. He was thought to be selling seaweed in partnership with another individual in one of his last jobs.
In April 2014, he was the subject of a missing person investigation. His family in Quebec contacted authorities after not hearing from him for several months.
A guitar belonging to Joseph remains unaccounted for. Determining its whereabouts may offer valuable information to investigators.
Police are looking for anyone who knew Joseph Bernie and would also like to speak to people who had been in the abandoned house in the first couple of weeks of October 2015.
