Man shot by police officer in downtown Winnipeg skywalk

WINNIPEG — A man is in hospital after he was shot by a police officer in the downtown Winnipeg skywalk Monday.

The shooting happened at 12:20 p.m. Monday, near the Subway on 266 Graham Avenue — the walkway that connects people to the Millennium Library. It’s also the walkway right above the police headquarters.

“At that time one of our on duty members was involved in an incident where he discharged a firearm. A male was shot,” Winnipeg police chief Chief Danny Smyth said Monday.

The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

Smyth said he’s not sure why the officer was in the walkway.

“But it’s not unusual for our members to use the walkway coming to work, or going on break,” Smyth said. “I don’t know why the specifics on why the officer was at the Subway.”

The identity of the officer is not known yet.

An independent investigation is now underway, Smyth said.
