A new study out of Mohawk College is flagging major safety concerns in the Rolston neighbourhood, particularly in school zones.
Students from the transportation engineering technology program teamed up with the neighbourhood committee to observe roadways and survey residents.
Lauren Soluk, a training specialist with the college says what students found were in some cases shocking.
“On average, 85 per cent of people going through those neighbourhoods were travelling 21 kilometres over the speed limit and that was in a community school zone.”
Soluk says school zones were also subjected to cars in no-parking zones and poor stop compliance, with only about 50 per cent of motorists obeying the signs.
The study also found that many parents chose to jaywalk with their children due to emissions from idling cars in school zones.
The report suggests installing pedestrian crossovers, tiger tail stop signs, and bumping up both bylaw enforcement and policing in those areas.
