‘The bullet went through our window’: East Village resident uncomfortably close to Calgary shooting

Calgary police are investigating after multiple shots were fired in the East Village on Tuesday. No suspects were in custody as of Wednesday night.

Officers told Global News to expect an update on Thursday.

The shooting happened in the 500 block of 6 Avenue S.E. at around 10:30 p.m.

Police said shell casings were found along the LRT tracks near 6 Avenue and 4 Street S.E.

During their investigation, officers searched the ground floor of a nearby apartment building.

Joanna Sheth said a bullet came through a window in the apartment she shares with her husband.

“We were just sitting in our living room and we heard multiple gunshots so we got up and looked out the window and saw some guys jumping over the fence.

“The bullet went through our window and we just went to the floor.”

“We weren’t sure if it was coming for us or not,” she said. “We went back out the back door and called the cops.”

Area resident Brian Carnahan lives on the 30th floor of the building and said he was watching TV when the shooting happened.

“[We] heard popping noises, probably a dozen. Wasn’t sure what it was – whether it was fireworks or something.  Looked out the window and didn’t really see anything.”

Carnahan said it wasn’t until later when he went to take his dog for a walk that he noticed police cars.

The investigation caused Calgary Transit to halt CTrains between city hall and Bridgeland; shuttle busses were brought in to transport passengers.

Police said several people are being questioned.

No injuries were reported.
