WINNIPEG — Winnipeg police have made an arrest in the city’s eighth homicide of the year.
Officers responded to the 400 block of Camden Place in Wolseley early Monday morning after receiving a 911 call.
The first officer arrived on scene, alone, and found a woman in her 50’s suffering from serious upper body injuries after being attacked with a knife.
Friends confirmed to Global News that the deceased woman was Judy Kenny, who was pronounced dead on scene.
“She seemed very nice,” one neighbour said. “I’m shocked.”
Police said within minutes another resident of the same street was arrested. Brenda Lee Schuff, 44, has been charged with second degree murder.
“Do we have any indication of a motive here? We don’t,” said Cst. Rob Carver. “We are not entirely sure about the relationship or the motive.”
It’s unclear what kind of relationship, if any, the two women had or if they even knew each other prior to the incident.
“This is entirely uncommon (for this area),” said one neighbour. “It’s surprising.”
While police are still trying to determine what may have happened that led to the killing, officers said it appears to be an isolated incident.
“Obviously (this is) hugely disturbing to have an incident like this in your neighbourhood or on your street,” Carver said. “But it does appear to be contained to this one incident.”
