A pair of Toronto capybaras that made international headlines last summer after escaping the city’s High Park Zoo are now proud new parents of three babies.
Toronto Mayor John Tory announced the new arrivals on Twitter Thursday morning.
“Proud to announce that the High Park Zoo capybaras are proud parents to 3 new pups. I’m told mother & pups are healthy & doing well,” Tory tweeted.

The baby capybaras’ parents, nicknamed Bonnie and Clyde, were on the lam for more than a month before they were captured and brought back to the zoo after both escaped during an animal transfer.
Despite multiple sightings, the pair stayed free until the first capybara was caught on June 12 with the other apprehended two weeks later.

According to zoo officials, the couple’s time apart rekindled their love for each other and both have three pups to show for it.
