Environment Canada issued snowfall warnings for parts of central Alberta Wednesday afternoon after issuing warnings for Banff and Jasper earlier in the day.
The weather agency issued the advisory for Banff and Jasper at around 4:30 a.m. and cautioned heavy snow would begin falling in mountain passes and along Highway 93 near Lake Louise.
Periods of snow are expected to continue Thursday with visibility potentially reduced at times due to heavy snow.
Shortly before 4 p.m., more warnings were added to the east of the Rocky Mountains. In the Rocky Mountain House region, Environment Canada said the higher snow accumulation would be in the north.
In all areas under a warning, 10 to 20 centimetres of snow are expected.
As of 4:45 p.m., the following areas were under a snowfall warning:
- Banff National Park
- Jasper National Park
- Nordegg – Forestry Trunk Road Highway 734
- Rocky Mountain House – Caroline
- Whitecourt – Edson – Fox Creek – Swan Hills
A snowfall warning had also been issued for Banff on Tuesday.
“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” Environment Canada cautioned on it swebsite. “If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.”
According to Environment Canada, snowfall warnings are issued when “significant snowfall” is expected.
