Vehicles can now park on designated parking ban routes. City crews worked around the clock, from 7 a.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday, to plow and sand city roads and sidewalks following last week’s snowfall. The city did not anticipate doing any neighbourhood blading this time around.

“Even with warm weather in the forecast, it was necessary to declare a seasonal parking ban to ensure our residents had a safe driving surface after the weekend snowfall,” said Eduardo Sosa, director of Roadway Maintenance with the City of Edmonton.

“We were able to clear freeways and arterial roads within 36 hours of the end of the snowfall, as per our policy.”

The city issued 321 tickets to drivers who didn’t obey the ban. During the most recent comparable ban in November 2015, the city issued 750 tickets.

“Edmontonians were, as a whole, very good about abiding by parking restrictions during the ban,” said parking enforcement coordinator Erin Blaine. “This shows that citizens are better understanding the role they play in helping crews do their work.”

This was the first seasonal parking ban of 2017. The only other ban put in place this winter was on Dec. 26, 2016.

Last week, the Edmonton area received nearly nine centimetres of snow between Friday and Sunday and about 10.6 centimetres between Wednesday and Sunday.

After a chilly week, Edmonton is in store for a warm up this week, with temperatures reaching highs of -3 C Monday, 6 C Tuesday and 7 C Wednesday.
