Fire crews were called to the 200 block of Coral Springs Mews N.E. to reports of a house fire at around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Officials said a person who lived in another house on the block called 911 and said they saw smoke coming from a second-storey window in the home.
The caller also banged on the door and rang the doorbell to alert any possible occupants.
There was nobody home at the time but homeowners did arrive on scene as firefighters were battling the blaze.
Officials said two pet birds suffered smoke inhalation and died in the fire.
Crews had the fire under control quickly and remained on scene to monitor hot spots and salvage what was left of the area affected by the blaze.
There is no word yet on what started the fire or how much damage was done.
No injuries were reported and officials continue to investigate.
