Out of thousands of contenders vying to become a Canadian astronaut, a UBC Okanagan instructor has made the shortlist.
Richard Federley is a chemistry instructor at the Kelowna campus.
But in a few month, the 35-year-old could be headed to NASA’s Johnson Space Centre to start basic astronaut training.
“When I think about going to space, it is really just this phenomenal opportunity to learn more about ourselves, this planet, and really try to push the boundaries of what humans can do,” said Federley.
There are 72 Canadians who have been short-listed from about 4,000 applications.
Federley is a thrill-seeker. He has learned to skydive and holds a pilots licence.
His students are cheering him on and speak highly of his work at the university.
