Drop in gas prices has Edmonton motorists cautiously pleased

EDMONTON – We may have just ushered in a new year, but – if you look at some of the gas prices around Edmonton – it seems like we’ve actually gone back in time. Gas prices dropped Wednesday, with a few gas stations charging less than 90 cents per litre.

“It’s nice to have low prices. I’m from BC actually, so this is a bargain for me,” laughs Gary Novlesky.

“I appreciate low gas prices,” he adds, “can’t complain about them.”

The average national gas price Wednesday was $117.5 per litre. The Alberta average was $98.9 per litre.

After seeing prices well above the dollar mark for much of 2012, this price dip is going over well with motorists.

“I’m thinking ‘great’,” says Cathy Taylor. “I wouldn’t have thought this a couple of years ago. I would have thought ‘oh, you know, anything over a dollar, forget it’, and now, we come and we get excited at 90 cents, it’s crazy,” admits Taylor.

“It’s just perspective. It’s what you get used to,” she adds.

Other Edmonton drivers aren’t jumping for joy over current gas prices.

“I kind of remember the old days,” says Ron Carlson. “Being a little bit older, I can remember gas used to be a lot cheaper.”

“I still think the oil companies kind of control that,” he adds. “They make it really expensive and then they bring it down to 90 cents and everybody thinks they’re getting a real good deal.”

Still, the drop in cost is good news for those who drive a lot.

“I used to have a bigger vehicle, a V8, and I actually traded it in because I couldn’t forward the gas,” says Taylor.

However, are drivers expecting the good fortune this New Year to last long?

“I’m expecting it not to even last a week,” she says.

Most Edmonton gas stations were charging $93.9 on Wednesday, but Costco (124 St and Yellowhead Trail) and the Tempo station (112 1 Ave and Golden Spike Road) came in with the lowest price at $89.9 a litre.
