Two teenagers wanted in connection with the serious assault of an employee at youth treatment centre near Edmonton have been taken into custody and charged.
Fort Saskatchewan RCMP said an Elk Island Youth Ranch worker suffered serious injuries after being attacked by two residents Saturday night.
“Last night just after 11 p.m. a female staff worker at Elk Island Youth Ranch was assaulted. We believe by two residents who then fled the scene,” Cpl. Mike McCreedy said.
McCreedy said the pair fled in a truck that was stolen from the ranch, immediately after the assault.
Police and Emergency Medical Services were called to the centre at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, where the victim was treated for serious injuries and later taken to an Edmonton hospital in STARS Air Ambulance.
STARS said the victim is in her 60s and was stabbed with a knife.
One of the teenagers turned himself into Edmonton Police Service late Sunday afternoon, and the second suspect was arrested in Edmonton at around 8:20 p.m. Both youth were taken into the custody of Fort Saskatchewan RCMP.
Police said both suspects were charged with attempted murder, theft of a vehicle, breach of probation and breach of recognizance. They’ll remain in custody pending a bail hearing.
The victim remains in hospital in stable condition, RCMP said.
The two youths can’t be named according to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The Elk Island Youth Ranch is located in Lamont County which is about 70 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
