Hampers assembled to feed Saskatonians in need

SASKATOON – Every December, the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre assembles special food baskets for those in need in the community.

On Saturday, approximately 2,500 people were expected to pick up hampers on Christmas Basket Day.

A group of volunteers came out and rolled up their sleeves to help underprivileged single people pick up a box of holiday spirit.

“We have an outpouring of community support. Sort of in the middle of November people say I really want to have a part of the Christmas basket day… So we have a lot of positions lots of shifts lots of people coming though and getting to work,” said Executive Director Laurie O’Connor.

For the second year in a row, the Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan and Lillydale Inc. teamed up to donate 2,000 birds for Christmas Hamper Day.

Around 40,000 kg of chicken was put into yesterday’s food baskets.

Organizers say this event is special because there are thousands of single people struggling to make ends meet and there are limited options for these types of households.

“It’s definitely worth while, it’s not hard and will make someone’s Christmas,” said a local volunteer.
