WINNIPEG — Former Winnipeg police chief Devon Clunis is starting the next chapter of his life with a new children’s book.
Clunis and his wife Pearlene are launching a book called The Little Boy from Jamaica: A Canadian History Story.
“I was starting to write an adult version of my story, I started sharing about my life then I thought this would actually make a great children’s story,” said Clunis. “I went into policing for kids.”
The book shares Clunis’ story of growing up in rural Jamaica with no electricity or running water to how he climbed the ranks to become the first black Chief of Police in Canadian history.
The story aims to inspire people to nurture the potential in every child.
“We wanted to use the book to inspire kids, adults, teachers and parents to rally around a child to do their very best,” he said.
The couple hired a local student from Red River College to do all of the illustration work for the book.
“Each page is a piece of artwork. It’s all done by hand, it’s all original art work,” said Clunis.
The book launches at McNally Robinson on January 28.
