Ring road talks to continue under new Tsuu T’ina leadership

CALGARY- The newly-elected chief of the Tsuu T’ina Nation says ongoing talks with the province to reach an agreement on the southwest leg of the ring road will continue.

On Friday, Roy Whitney said any deal would have to include guarantees and be ratified by a significant majority of the Tsuu T’ina people, adding he wants to enhance discussions with band members to make sure their views are represented.

“We want to speed up the process of having communication and dialogue with our community, and developing a process that’s going to enhance the community’s thoughts in terms of what this means to them,” Whitney said. “Not only for today, but for the future.”

Alberta’s transportation minister says he’s looking forward to meeting with Whitney, but doesn’t know what effect the change in leadership will have on negotiations.

“It could set it back, it could accelerate it, time will tell,” McIver says.
He adds that as much as he would like to see a deal done, people need to be patient.

“Obviously it would be a good thing, but sooner is better than later.”
