A Saint-Jérôme couple is facing multiple charges in connection to the death of their eight-week-old daughter on May 18.

Sandra Laverdure, 30, faces charges with manslaughter, corruption of morals, criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide necessities of life.

She is currently pregnant.

Mathieu-Charles Mongrain, 27, faces charges of corruption of morals and failing to provide necessities of life.

The Journal de Montréal is reporting toxicology tests showed traces of methamphetamine in the baby’s blood, which seemed to have been ingested during breastfeeding.

The couple is required to go to rehab for a six-month program, as well as adhere to several restrictions:

  • The couple cannot communicate with each other, unless to discuss medical reasons surrounding their unborn child
  • The two cannot consume alcohol or drugs
  • They cannot hold any job that puts them in contact with someone aged 16 or younger

“We decided that it was OK to release them under the conditions that were said in court, so to go to therapy 24-hours a day,” said prosecutor Caroline Lafleur.

Their next court appearance is March 10.
